📋 Overview
Post-ticketing fees are charges that arise after a flight ticket has been issued — typically when a passenger needs to modify, correct, or cancel their booking. These fees are set entirely by airlines and can vary significantly based on the fare type, airline policy, and how soon before departure the change is made.
Xpedioair works to minimize these fees on your behalf, including leveraging the DOT 24-hour free cancellation rule and airline-specific waiver policies.
❓ What Are Post-Ticketing Fees
When you purchase an airline ticket, the fare you pay is subject to the rules associated with that fare class. Most airlines distinguish between:
- Refundable fares: Allow changes and cancellations at no airline charge (though fare differences may apply)
- Non-refundable / restricted fares: Subject to change fees and may offer only credit, not a cash refund
- Basic Economy: The most restrictive fare — typically no changes allowed, or changes subject to the highest fees
Post-ticketing fees are charged by the airline at the time the change is processed. They are separate from Xpedioair's service fee.
📅 Date & Time Change Fees
Changing your travel date or time is one of the most common post-ticketing changes. Fee ranges by airline:
| Airline | Basic Economy | Main Cabin | Refundable |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | Not permitted | $0–$200 | $0 |
| Delta Air Lines | Up to $400 | $0 | $0 |
| United Airlines | Up to $400 | $0 | $0 |
| Southwest Airlines | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| JetBlue Airways | Up to $100 | $0 | $0 |
| Spirit Airlines | Up to $119 | Up to $119 | Up to $119 |
| Frontier Airlines | Up to $99 | Up to $99 | $0 |
* Fare differences between old and new flights may apply regardless of change fees. Data current as of June 2026.
📝 Name Correction Fees
The TSA requires that the name on your boarding pass match your government-issued ID exactly. If your name was misspelled or entered incorrectly, a correction fee may apply:
- Minor corrections (1–3 characters): Most airlines allow these at low or no cost
- Middle name corrections: Generally free or very low cost
- Significant corrections or full name changes: May require re-ticketing at current fare
- Legal name changes (marriage, court order): Free at most airlines with documentation
Name changes for the purpose of transferring a ticket to a different passenger are not permitted by any U.S. airline. A new ticket must be purchased.
❌ Cancellation & Refund Fees
Cancellation fees depend heavily on your fare type and how far in advance you cancel:
- Within 24 hours of booking: All U.S. airlines must offer a full refund under DOT regulations, regardless of fare type, as long as the flight is at least 7 days away
- Non-refundable tickets: Most airlines offer a travel credit minus a cancellation fee; some waive the fee and credit the full amount
- Refundable tickets: Full cash refund, no fee
Xpedioair always attempts to invoke the 24-hour rule or applicable waivers before requesting a fee-based cancellation.
🛡️ Fee Waiver Opportunities
Xpedioair proactively looks for the following waiver opportunities when processing your request:
- DOT 24-hour rule: Free cancellation within 24 hours of booking (flight must be 7+ days away)
- Bereavement waivers: Most airlines waive fees for death of an immediate family member
- Medical waivers: Available at most airlines for documented serious illness
- Military deployment: All U.S. airlines waive fees for active-duty military orders
- Schedule change waivers: If the airline changed your schedule by 2+ hours, you may be entitled to a free change or full refund
- Elite status benefits: Frequent flyer status often includes reduced or waived change fees
